Nelson Mandela, a true great of not only our time, but any time.
In recognition of his services to the cause of freedom Mandela was made an Honorary Freeman of the city of Newcastle.
At the time the freedom was given to Mandela he was still serving life imprisonment in South Africa. The original Freedom Scroll was taken on his behalf by a member of the African National Congress during an A.N.C Rally in Newcastle in 1986.
Following Madiba's release from prison in 1991 he was subsequently elected President of South Africa. During a visit to the UK in 1993 he visited Glasgow.
It was at this time Nelson Mandela was presented with his own Freedom Scroll by the then Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor Joan Lamb.
She recounts her story here with her daughter-in-law Sharon Lamb who was also at the ceremony.
Nelson Mandela died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday 5th December 2013.
The world mourns the loss of one of the most influential men in history.
